On April 22 members and volunteers of TFP–Louisiana campaigned in defense of traditional marriage at Texas A&M University. The action commenced with the traditional three Hail Marys and the TFP battle cry, “Tradition, Family, Property — America.” Flyers titled 10 Reasons Why Homosexual ‘Marriage’ is Harmful and Must be Opposed were politely handed to students.
Texas A&M is unlike other universities. Large numbers of cadets walk from building to building wearing khaki uniforms with well-shined shoes or brown leather riding boots. Cadets are clean-cut, disciplined and carry themselves with good posture. They inherit a tradition of excellence and heroism.
However, the rest of the student body wears another “uniform” from the insipid ’60s: T-shirts, jeans, tennis shoes, flip-flops or no shoes at all. Yes, I saw several students walking barefoot! What a stark contrast with the cadets.
Under a layer of apathy, many students supported the campaign and demonstrated their sympathy, saying: “Keep up the good work,” and “I wholeheartedly agree with you.” Some gave us a thumbs up or nods of approval. Of course, there were token liberals who disliked the campaign. These expressed their antipathy with foul language and insults.
One amusing comment concerned the TFP standard. A student said to her colleague in a tone of disgust, “that red flag is sooo… Christian.”
TFP member Elias Bartel engaged in a discussion with a middle-aged man carrying a motorcycle helmet. The man admitted that the TFP arguments were philosophically and logically sound, yet he still refused to concede that same-sex “marriage” is harmful and should be opposed. After an hour and a half of activity, about fifteen hundred flyers were distributed.
At the end of the day, traditional marriage was defended.
